Welcome to Centreville Baptist Church

Our History

The story of Centreville Baptist Church began in the early 1880's with a Sunday School class in the office of Dr. J.C. Robert. The class grew rapidly and was moved to the school building on the corner of St. Mary and Cosby Streets. This was the nucleus of the first Baptist church in the present Centreville area.

In March, 1885 the Centreville Baptist group met in the home of Dr. J.C. Robert. The group was organized as a church by the Reverend Peter Turner, the first pastor. The new church began to meet upstairs in R.J. Fenn's store on Main Street until a building was constructed. Land was purchased for the first building site, and so the first building was begun. Mr. Allen Roark was in charge of constructing the frame building, and in August, 1886 Centreville Baptist Church dedicated its first building. This building was used until 1934, when the present brick building was erected. Many of the early church records were lost to fire, but in 1925, the church membership had increased to 185. By 1934, the existing building was not large enough to serve the growing membership, so a building program was launched to erect the current brick building.

Centreville Baptist Church has seen many changes over the past 140 years, but some things will always remain the same. We are a conservative Southern Baptist congregation who strives to serve a great God from a small town. We believe that God has called us to love Him with all our hearts, minds, souls, and strength; and to love people.
